Brief

Students were asked to design a knowledge and healing centre for Maari Ma Health; an indigenous health organisation located in Broken Hill which is dedicated to improving the health outcomes for communities in the far west region of New South Wales.

After embarking on a one week trip to the inland mining city, students used their newfound knowledge of Aboriginal culture and history to propose a unique space that would foster indigenous health through holistic practises. They aimed to embed emotional, spiritual, cultural and environmental dimensions.

Proposal

Our proposal for Maari Ma’s knowledge and healing centre took inspiration from a conversation between UTS and Broken Hill High School students, as well as our own individual experience from Mutawintji: an ancient and sacred indigenous site.

The students at Broken Hill High discussed their safe spaces; either united with friends in a communal area, or by themselves, amongst the natural and vast landscape. It was clear that each of these spaces created two different emotional experiences; one being the feeling of community and joy, whilst the other being freedom and peace.

During our tour at Mutawintji, we ourselves were able to experience the feelings that the students expressed. This inspired us to bring back the overall sensorial experience of the land, including its knowledge and sacred history, and embed it on to the site.

In recognition of these two spaces, we integrated two typologies within our design: 1. Enclosed communal hubs in the form of three different sized pavilions, that encourage congregation, connection and communication with others. 2. Passageways and outdoor spaces that allow for healing through personal reflection and contemplation.

The layout of the healing and knowledge centre allows for individuals to carry out their own journey through the spaces with the intention to revive, teach and preserve the information of the Barkandji nation, and for them to either gain a sense of pride towards their identity or respect towards the traditional custodians of the land.

The form of each space was inspired by particular experiences and moments from Mutawintji, as depicted in the photos.
